MIAMI (April 7, 2014) – Prominent South Florida attorneys Gonzalo R. Dorta and Matias R. Dorta announced today the formation of Dorta Law, a boutique Coral Gables-based trial law firm. The minority-owned firm will provide trial practice services with an additional focus on commercial litigation and arbitration.
Led by the Dorta brothers, who collectively bring more than 50 years of state and federal trial experience, Dorta Law will serve clients in a range of practice areas, including complex commercial litigation, business disputes, wrongful death, professional malpractice, premises liability, and eminent domain. The veteran duo will concentrate on handling litigation disputes destined to be decided at trial.
“There is a significant demand in South Florida for practitioners with the desire and ability to try a case to verdict, as well as handle the appeal,” said Gonzalo Dorta. “Law firms are increasingly seeking trial practitioners to assist with strategy or to serve as lead trial counsel or second chair when they have a case going to trial. Our combined trial experience handling a variety of matters affords us the ability to provide these services, not only to our clients, but to other fine litigators on a much broader scale, setting us apart from traditional trial practices.”
“Clients come to us with disputes that can only be resolved through trial,” said Matias Dorta. “We also enjoy the opportunity to work with our fellow colleagues and distinguished members of the bar who seek assistance in trying complex cases. This is a significant aspect of our practice because we appreciate our role as trial counsel and respect the existing attorney-client relationship.”
The Dorta brothers come from a lineage of attorneys and politicians with historic Cuban roots. Their grandfather was a prosecutor in Cuba for 20 years and their great-uncle served as a congressman who helped draft the 1940 Constitution of Cuba, considered to be one of the most advanced constitutions of any Spanish-speaking country.
“I am excited to join my brother and to have the opportunity to practice together under the family name,” added Matias Dorta. “We discussed it for many years, and it was a dream of my father’s, who unfortunately passed away. Coincidentally, he would have been celebrating his 84th birthday this month as we officially open Dorta Law.”
Before forming Dorta Law, Gonzalo Dorta was a sole trial practitioner at Gonzalo R. Dorta, P.A. With more than 30 years of experience, Gonzalo focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation, tort litigation, and appellate representation at the state and federal levels. He was appointed by former Gov. Jeb Bush to the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in Miami-Dade County and is one of the longest serving members of Florida’s Judicial Nominating Commission for State Courts in Miami-Dade County, which he has chaired. He is also a former member of Florida’s Federal Judicial Nomination Commission. Actively involved in improving the judiciary and the legal process, Gonzalo Dorta has served as Florida’s designee at the Uniform Law Commissioners, a non-profit association responsible for revising and recommending uniform codification throughout the country with laws in the areas of corporate formation, guardianship, child custody, and related legal issues. A graduate of the University of Miami and Georgetown University Law Center, Gonzalo Dorta has been a guest speaker at several bar associations on the topic of judicial appointments, and has been nominated for the past ten years as one of South Florida’s elite trial attorneys.
Matias Dorta was previously a partner at Miami-based Tew Cardenas LLP. With more than 25 years of experience, Matias Dorta focuses his practice on business litigation at the trial and appellate levels in state and federal courts, as well as in arbitration and administrative proceedings. He has represented clients in a variety of complex cases, such as business disputes, Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) actions, shareholder derivative actions, professional malpractice, and eminent domain. His notable representations include serving as lead trial counsel for a Dominican Republic-based bank in a RICO action against financier and related entities resulting in a judgment of over $176 million after a jury verdict; defending a former director of a Venezuelan bank charged with RICO violations; and serving as lead trial counsel in numerous eminent domain cases representing landowners against condemning authorities. Matias Dorta is certified by the Florida Supreme Court as a Circuit Civil Mediator and served on the Judicial Nomination Commission for the Third District Court of Appeal for 10 years, including one year as chairman. He is a graduate of the University of Miami and Georgetown University Law Center.
Gonzalo Dorta and Matias Dorta participate in many community activities, including coaching inner city youth in organized tackle football and basketball.
